About TFC Dynamo

'What's in a name?

The name 'Dynamo' was chosen in honour of the Dynamo Kiev team of the late 1930s, who were trapped in the city during the Nazi occupation. Working in a state bakery, the team was reformed as FC Start, and played in exhibition matches designed by the Germans to pacify the population. The plan backfired when Start swept all before them, including a crack German Luftwaffe side brought in to put them in their place. Most of the side were interned in a death camp after this victory, and four were executed. The Dynamo players played no small part in giving the people of Kiev the strength to last through Nazi rule.

The legend 'Fizcult Hura' which we carry on our crest was the salute given by Kiev before they played Flakelf, when they were asked to give the Nazi salute. It means 'physical culture' in Ukrainian, and traditionally means bettering oneself through sport. A wee bit hippy, a wee bit feng-shui, maybe, but its nice to remember what football is all about.

Anyone interested in the above story should read 'Dynamo: Defending the Honour of Kiev' by Andy Dougan. A shameless plug for which we expect to get paid, but its an amazing story that every footballer should read.

People sometimes ask what the TFC stands for? And the straight answer is, well, nothing really- but there is a loose explanation of how it came about. We'd been playing 5 a sides together for about a year and so to organise the games week in, week out Bob set up an email account by the name totalfitba@yahoo.co.uk. I hope it doesn't come as a revelation to you that the name is meant to be flippant, rather than a serious indication of how we view ourselves. Why look, it even has slang in it! So as not to deny our heritage, and because 'Dynamo' in itself is a bit dull, we chose to incorporate the 'tf' from the 'totalfitba' part of the - still hilarious - email address. And the 'c', well because all good clubs have one.

However, I can categorically state we are not Total Fitba Club Dynamo. Just TFC Dynamo, and the email address is equally valid for anyone wanting to correspond with the team- not just 5-a-sides.
